DeShannon Butler, Principal, Bridge Gate Community School

A native of Columbus, Ohio, I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from Central State University.  I obtained my teaching license via Ashland University's Bachelor's Plus Program and have since graduated with a Masters of Educational Administration (M.Ed.) in 2015. Currently, I am seeking a Masters of Curriculum and Instruction, as well as a Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) endorsement.

Mercedes Casillas, Instructional Aide

Hello, I am Mercedes Casilla and I serve as an Instructional Aide. I attended Garfield High School in Los Angeles, California. I came to Columbus, Ohio in 1997. I was a volunteer at South Western City Schools as an Interpreter. I worked in different companies and in 2006, I became a Dental Assistant; taking my test for my licenses at OSU Dental Board. Since then, I have worked in different dental practices. In December 2016, I started working at Bridge Gate Community School and I love helping kids and interpreting their work for teachers. I have three boys and love cooking.

Terry Ingram, CTE

Hello, my name is Terry Ingram. I teach CTE Business and Personal Finance. My education includes a B.S. Management and Marketing from Franklin University, and Master’s program Education and Human Ecology from Ohio State University. I also hold a certificate in HVAC Technology from Columbus State Community College. In 2009, I began substitute teaching for Columbus Public School system.  In 2012, I began working for The Educational Empowerment Group (EEG) teaching business and financial literacy. My corporate background is in customer service, mutual fund trade, and portfolio management system for equity trading.  I have volunteered for Junior. Achievement teaching high school personal finance and have worked in a summer enrichment program through Upward Bound, Ohio Wesleyan division.  I am a father of two and have been married for thirteen years.


Matthew McIntyre, Social Studies Teacher

Hi, my name is Matthew McIntyre. I have taught 7th grade Ancient World History, 8th grade Early American History, Modern World History, and Modern US History, and Economics at Bridge Gate Community School. I hold a B.S. degree in Social Studies Education from Bowling Green State University. In 2016-2017, I started my second year of teaching. Before coming to Bridge Gate Community School, I taught for one year as an Intervention Specialist at Achieve Career Preparatory Academy in Toledo. In addition to teaching, I worked as a Resident Advisor for two years in college; among many jobs. I love sports and music. I am a big-time Cleveland sports fan. I have an older sister and a twin brother.


Ryan Owen, Math Teacher

Hello, my name is Ryan Owen. I teach Fundamentals of Geometry & Algebra, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus. I hold a B.S. in Business Administration degree from Shawnee State University and a Masters in Mathematics Education from Ohio University. In 2016-2017 I began my first-year teaching Mathematics at Bridge Gate Community School.  Prior to this, I taught Special Education for transitional aged students at Pioneer Center School in Ross County Ohio.  Over the past eight years, I have worked as a substitute teacher, private tutor, and soccer coach.  I played soccer on the men's soccer team at Shawnee State University for four years.  My wife, Cari, and I enjoy gardening, backpacking, and many other outdoor activities.  I have amazing and loving parents who live in northeastern Ohio and two great brothers who have families in Colorado and California.


Mary Timm, Language Arts Teacher

My name is Mary Timm and I teach middle school Language and Arts as well as high school English. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Education degree from Ohio University. I am currently in my twelfth year of teaching. Prior to teaching at Bridge Gate Community School, I taught in Dayton for seven years both in charter and public schools. I moved to Columbus in 2012 and taught at a blended learning high school until 2016. In addition to teaching. I have served on a number of school committees and advised a variety of student clubs and organizations. I currently live in Reynoldsburg and am an avid Columbus Crew and Ohio State football fan.


Philips Akinwole, Science Teacher

I teach Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, and Physical Science and hold a MSc. In Environmental Science from UNESCO-IHE in Delft, the Netherland. As a child, I developed a life-long passion for nature especially for lakes, streams and parks, but also enjoy writing and traveling. I chose to pursue a career in Biology and received my interdisciplinary training in Zoology and Environmental Science. The Netherlands Fellowship Program awarded me a Master’s study in Environmental Science in 2003 at the UNESCO-IHE, Delft, in the Netherlands. I came to Columbus, OH in 2014 after teaching biology as a Teaching Assistant for three years at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, AL. Additionally, I taught sciences for one year at City Prep Academy before joining the Bridge Gate Community School.
